Poverty in North Korea
North Korea is a totalitarian dictatorship. This totalitarian dictatorship governs to its own benefit and leaves its citizens in Poverty. Although statistics are difficult to come by, due to the isolationist nature of North Korea, the existing data on Poverty in North Korea is unsettling, to say the least.
Considering the supreme leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, has no qualms about killing family members it is no surprise that his “constituents” are living in inexplicably poor conditions.
As a whole, North Korea has one of the lowest GDPs on earth; they are 206th in the world. North Korea, also has the same unemployment rate that the United States had at the peak of the great depression: 25%. The primary driver of the North Korean economy is military expansion. This is one of the primary causes of poverty amongst the inhabitants of North Korea, as the North Korean government severely draws from civilian needed resources in order to continue to develop its military.
Life as a North Korean citizen is plagued with poverty, hunger and overall misery. More than 25% of children under the age of five in North Korea suffer from severe malnutrition. Considering what is said about North Korea, this may seem to be a low number.
